Heavy Medal

We make no bones about it—at Family Times we like winning awards, and we were pleased to land a couple in the most recent national competition with peer publications.

Maggie Lamond Simone, Family Times’ Mom’s the Word columnist, received a gold award for humor columns from the Parenting Publications of America, the national industry association for newspapers and magazines like Family Times. Family Times entered the columns in the category for publications with 30,000 and under circulation.

Simone has written for the magazine since 2002. It was Simone’s fifth PPA award and her third gold. She received a gold award last year in the personal essay category.

“The ability to observe her personal universe in an amusing way and then to narrate those experiences with language that’s catchy and entertaining are the attributes that this author brings to the page,” the judges wrote about Simone’s entries.

Family Times also received a bronze award for its June 2007 cover in the newsprint: original photo category. Michael Davis was the photographer, and Lisa A. Mergler-Santoro designed the cover, a portrait of musician Noah Kellman, one of the subjects of a feature story on young CNY jazz artists.

Mergler-Santoro attended the March 1 PPA awards banquet in Little Rock, Ark., and accepted the awards on behalf of Family Times.

A panel from the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism faculty reviewed the 1,249 entries in the competition. PPA represents more than 120 parenting magazines and newspapers in the United States, Canada and Australia.
