CNY Magazine Lands National Awards
Family Times won three awards in the annual Parenting Publications of America 2011 competition.
The awards were announced March 5 at the conclusion of the PPA’s annual convention, held in Arlington, Va.
PPA is a non-profit national organization that represents more than 116 parenting newspapers and magazines.The local magazine’s awards were won in the “30,000 or fewer” circulation category (Family Times has a circulation of 27,000 a month).
The competition drew 915 entries from 75 publications.
For her Teachable Moments columns, writer Emma Kress won a gold award in the Family Matters column category. Teachable Moments began appearing in Family Times in August 2009. The monthly column addresses important issues related to education, such as parent-teacher conferences and encouraging reluctant readers. Kress and her husband and two children live in Syracuse. She is a teacher at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Eileen Gilligan earned a PPA silver award for her personal essay, “Coming Up Empty,” about her struggles to breastfeed her two children. “Eileen Gilligan takes parents on a journey of heartbreak and hope after the birth of her child,” judges wrote. Gilligan also writes a regular Family Times column called Bright Ideas, which won a PPA silver award in 2009. Gilligan lives in Baldwinsville with her husband and two children. She is an assistant professor and director of the Center for Community Journalism, based at SUNY Oswego.
For its monthly calendar of events, Family Times received a bronze award. The calendar is compiled by Reid Sullivan, editor in chief of Family Times and former events editor of the Syracuse New Times.
Family Times was founded in May 2002 by editor Tina Schwab and publisher Art Zimmer. The monthly parenting magazine is owned and published by Bill Brod, who purchased Family Times and the alternative weekly Syracuse New Times in 2010.
