Winning Smiles

Family Times Cover Kid Contest judges once again faced a challenge to come up with four winners out of dozens of entries in the seventh annual contest.

Judges chose one winner and one finalist in each of the age categories.

The judges were Michael Davis, Family Times photographer, John Carnessali of John Carnessali Photography, and John Farnach of Photography By John Farnach.

Though the number of entries dropped from last year’s competition, the judges still had their work cut out for them.

“I was looking for them to look natural and not pose-y,” Carnessali said. “That was probably the determining factor.”

The winners in the four age categories were: Zoyee Reese Newton of Weedsport (ages 2 to 4); Lauren Mahler of Syracuse (ages 5 to 7); Patrick Barnaba of Baldwinsville (ages 8 to 11); Mia Shum of Baldwinsville (ages 12 to 16). Each of the winners will appear on a forthcoming cover of Family Times.

The finalists in each category were: Kaleb Akins of Syracuse (ages 2 to 4); Remy Cleland of Liverpool (ages 5 to 7); Kadee Scobell of Liverpool (ages 8 to 11); Ryan Scobell of Liverpool (ages 12 to 16), older brother of fellow finalist Kadee.

(One finalist alone was chosen in each group this year due to the smaller number of entries.)

A portion of entry fees from the Cover Kid Contest will be donated to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital’s Child Life Playroom Fund, which pays for special activities for patients at the hospital, such as ice cream socials, taco days, or providing balloons for all the children in the facility. On any given day, nearly 200 children receive care at the hospital, including inpatient care, one-day surgery and emergency care.

Family Times thanks the diligent judges, enthusiastic parents and photogenic children who helped make this year’s Cover Kid Contest a success.

(Anyone who appears on a cover of Family Times is no longer eligible to win the Cover Kid Contest, but others are welcome to submit photos for children ages 2 to 16 to the 2011 contest.
