Nature skills teach young people about the earth—and themselves

By Kira Maddox

It’s the middle of summer on a hot June day. A group of kids trek through Arnot Forest, a 4,000-plus-acre expanse of woodland just south of Ithaca in the Finger Lakes.

Camp Fair 2009

Camp Fair 2009 gave some 50 summer programs, and residential and day camps a chance to talk to families and potential participants and help them make plans for the long vacation.

And while parents perused brochures and asked staffers’ questions, kids got their faces painted, watched performances and sat for caricatures.

Families also entered drawings to win backpacks, donated by EMS, a birthday party at Shades of Orange, tickets to Sesame Street Live! or a free week at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo’s Zoo Camp. Many visitors earned free DVDs, CDs and books by writing down their favorite advice for new parents (and some of those words of wisdom will appear in Baby Times, Family Times’ annual publication just for expectant and new parents).

The entire extravaganza, the fifth presented by Family Times: The Parenting Guide of Central New York, took place on the commons level of Carousel Center on March 7.
