Snaps that Popped

Most parents aren’t professional photographers—but when it comes to taking stellar shots of their children, they’re often the best people for the job.

Parents submitted 109 photos of their children in Family Times’ fourth annual Cover Kid Contest. This year, for the first time, the contest included a category for young people ages 13 to 16; previously, only children up to age 12 were eligible.

The judges, all professional photographers, were asked to focus on the children themselves and disregard criteria such as lighting and composition. Accepting the challenge this year: Diane Salatino, co-owner of Giggles & Grins Family Photography in Mattydale, Genevieve Fridley of Genevieve Fridley Photography in Fayetteville and Michael Davis, Family Times photographer.

Narrowing the choices took much discussion and debate, but ultimately the judges selected four winners, one in each age category. In a Cover Kid Contest first, the judges picked a brother and sister as the winners in their two age categories. In another coincidence, a young woman won in a category in which her brother placed as a finalist. (All judging was based on photos alone, with contestants’ names and addresses hidden.)

Winners in each of the four age categories were: Madison Santaro of Fayetteville (ages 0 to 35 months); Michael Santaro of Fayetteville (ages 3 to 6); Chelsi Sarno of Syracuse (ages 7 to 12); and, in the new teen category, Shelby Rohadfox of Syracuse (ages 13 to 16). Each of them will appear on a cover of Family Times during 2007 or 2008.

Finalists in each category were: Reagan Forian of Syracuse and Aidan Green of Baldwinsville (ages 0 to 35 months); Ella Rundberg of Baldwinsville and Austin Anthony Carter of Onondaga Hill (ages 3 to 6); MacKenzie Proud and Mikaela Norris, both of Syracuse (ages 7 to 12); Evan Rohadfox of Syracuse and Natalie Sportelli of Jamesville (ages 13 to 16).

A portion of the contest entry fees will be donated to Charity for Children, a non-profit organization that provides services to seriously ill Central New York children and their families. (For more information, call 701-1162 or visit the Web site at www.charityforchildreninc.com.)

Thank you to the delightful children, proud parents and scrupulous judges who made this year’s Cover Kid Contest such a terrific event.
