Proud parents submitted 106 photos of their children in Family Times’ fifth annual Cover Kid Contest. Children ages 2 to 12 were eligible to compete in one of four age categories.
The judges, all professional photographers, were asked to focus on the children themselves and disregard criteria such as lighting and composition. Accepting the challenge this year: Parmalee of Parmalee Photography, Jill Schmid of Forum Studio in Syracuse and Duane Suaro of Sauro Photographic Art in Syracuse. (All judging was based on photos alone, with contestants’ names and addresses hidden.)
“I went to what faces drew me in because of their personality,” notes Schmid.
Suaro added, “It was very difficult,” as every child seemed to offer something special. The judges worked together to narrow the field, however, and soon came up with their top choices.
Winners in each of the four age categories were: Evan Kendall Hill of Syracuse (ages 2 to 4); Elijah Knight of North Syracuse (ages 5 to 7); Macie Shum of Baldwinsville (ages 8 to 11); and Jonathan Bocketti of Bridgeport (ages 12 to 16). Each of them will appear on a cover of Family Times during 2009.
Finalists in each category were: Luke Peios of LaFayette and Tyler McCarrick of Liverpool (ages 2 to 4); Sophia Izabella Trorato of Liverpool and Gabriella Perla of Cicero (ages 5 to 7); Breona Courcy of Syracuse and Abby Moore of North Syracuse (ages 8 to 11); and Domini Britton of Clay and Trevor Gregoire of Baldwinsville (ages 12 to 16).
A portion of the contest entry fees will be donated to Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area and its Family Place program, which provides safe opportunities for parents to visit their children who are in foster care. For information, call 479-1321, or visit the Web site at www.sasyr.org.
